Day 11 – Kamakura and Yokohama (with a little Tokyo)

Got up and headed straight to the train station to head to Kamakura for the morning. We grabbed McDonald’s, which is right next to our hotel and may become a theme, for breakfast. Got to Kamakura with no issues and boarded the local “electric” rail to the stop near our 2 main things to see there, a Great Buddha and the beach. We headed out from the station straight to the temple that housed the great Buddha statue. This Buddha is not quite as big as the one in Nara but its pretty darn big. This one is outside and you can also go inside the main cavity in the body and see how it was made, etc. After looking around we headed out back down the road where there was another temple next to the road the housed an 11 headed Kannon so we decided to head in there. This temple was much nicer and had a nice little garden with a Koi pond and some turtles. As you went up the hill there was a shrine with hundreds of little statues around it. At the top of the hill there is an observation area where you can see the beach area and the town of Kamakura. There are also 2 temple buildings each with a different statue in it. The central one houses the 11-headed Kannon but no pictures coulg be taken. It is a big golden statue with, wait for it, 11 heads. In one of the others is another pretty big Buddha (not great mind you). To the right of all of this is a cave filled with carvings of lesser gods and a shrine to a god of the sea. It was very low so getting through was interesting but it was pretty cool. After looking over everything else we headed back toward the beach and walked around for a little while on the volcanic looking sand. We had seen a Hawaiian restarant by the station and decided to try it out for lunch. I got loco moco and Becky got a chicken dish and we also had a piece of Spam musubi (sp?) which is basically Spam sushi. It was all very good and we headed out to go back to Yokohama for the afternoon. After arriving in Yokohama we went by the Landmark Tower which is the tallest building in Japan and went through the mall beneath it and found a 7-11 which was a perfect because they have an international ATM so I could get some more cash as I was running a little low from my Iwakuni funds. We then walked down and took a few pictures at the Hard Rock that is in the mall and wend out to explore the marina area. When we got out we saw an amusement park area with a huge ferris wheel so we wandered through there until we found our way to the ferris wheel entrance. We bought 2 tickets and rode it around which gave us some great views of Yokohama and , I think, all the way back to Tokyo in the distance. After riding this we wandered through the arcade then down and through another mall, seeing our second Cold Stone Creamery of the day, and headed down the marina toward a park. On our way to the park we saw what I think were remnants of when Yokohama was one of the few foreigh ports in Japan and saw 2 big red brick western style warehouse buildings with a neat flower arrangment done in the middle. We headed on to the park and stopped to get a few drinks at a convenience store at the entrance. We walked through the park where there were more flower arrangments, a contest?, and a statue of a girl with red shoes and the goddes of the sea. This is where we had to turn to go to Chinatown, which is the largest one in Japan. We strolled through the streets of Chinatown looking at the sights and after a while we were getting hungry so we looked for a place to eat. We chose one finally and pointed at the pictures of the Chinese food to the waiter who spoke only Japanese. We are getting pretty good at ordering somewhat random items from pictures alone and we were reasonably successful tonight. I have no idea what to call what we had but I had a cast iron bowl with rice and egg in the bottom topped with veggies and meat which kind of cooked as you stir it and Becky had kind of a chicken and veggies with sauce meal and rice. There were a few things I will let Becky tell you about with the meal that were interesting but all in all if was a good one and afterwards we were off to the train station to head back to Tokyo. On the way I decided we could jump off and go see the Tokyo Tower so we got off and walked over to the Tower and took a few pictures and headed back to the station. When we got to our station I saw a Bic Camera store which is a huge multi story electronics store and we needed to find a charger for Becky’s camera as we left hers in Kyoto. We were unable to get a charger but I did find a gorilla pod for my camera which is a little flexible tribod stand that hopefully I can put to good use on some of the night pictures we will be taking over the next few days. Well gotta get to bed just Skyped with the work crew but have to get up early tomorrow so that’s all for now.
