Day 3 – Iwakuni, shopping, etc.

We started off the day just posting things on the website and hanging out with the Davis’s until steven went to work late in the morning. Leah made us a wonderful breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast to get us started. We then proceeded to go to the exchange on base and bought some post cards and looked around. Afterwords we packed up Zach and headed to Nafco (sp?) which is kind of like a Japanese Lowes.

We looked around in there for a while (Dad you would have loved it I think) before heading to the “dragonfly” store which is a second hand store but had a lot of cool gifts and everything from clothing to appliances to furniture.

After getting a few things there we went to the first of a couple of 100 Yen stores (think Dollar store but with more and better quality items) and we shopped around a little before heading to Curry House Coco which is a Japanese curry place. This was similar to Indian curry but maybe a little spicier and had some interesting toppings (I had fried quail eggs and pork cutlets, Becky had sausage and eggplant).

After this we went to a Japanese electronics store called Yamada Denki which was pretty fantastic it had everything you would expect in say a Best Buy, etc with some cool Japanese twists. Everything was smaller like vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, etc.

There were some massage chairs there that Sheryl (Becky’s stepmom) had told us we had to try out as they do a pretty thorough job so Becky jumped in the first one and a worker there had to come help us operate it as the remote was very complex. Once it started Becky’s expressions were priceless and I am not sure the pictures will do it justice but Leah and I were crying we were laughing so hard. After several minutes we rescued her from it as she kept calling out that it was trying to trap her (it holds onto both hands and feet). Leah tried one as well and I found another one for Becky to try and surprisingly she jumped right in and told me to start it up. She went through several phases with similar expressions before finally on level 11 (counting down from 15 I think) telling us to help her escape again.

Leah and Becky wanted me to try it next so I got on and let me tell you it was VERY relaxing. Not sure what setting it was on for her but I made it through to stage 8.

We then went to look at all the fascinating electronic toilet seats (costing up to 3500 dollars).

After the electronics store we went to another 100 Yen store and looked around there for a while before heading home for the evening. Steven got off work a little early so we watched Modern Family with them for the rest of the evening.
