Beach Strolls, Rotisserie Chicken & French Cough Syrup

Becky was feeling a little better this morning but still not 100%, so we took some extra time getting up and around and looked for an activity that would mostly keep us in the air conditioning. We’ve visited several of the museums in Nice before in prior trips, but had never visited the Villa Masséna Musée, so that made it a good choice for the day.

It was a warm and sunny morning, but there was a nice breeze, so we decided to stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and take in the beach scenery on the way to the museum, knowing we could catch the bus the rest of the way if needed, as well as on the return trip. The museum contains artifacts from Nice’s municipal history and is located in a historical mansion. The English audio tour didn’t quite work as advertised and all of the exhibit placards were in French, so we weren’t always sure what we were looking at, but we did spot several items related to Napoleon, Princess Josephine, and Napoleon III. We likely wouldn’t describe it as a must-see if you were short on time, but it was a nice low-key (and air conditioned) activity for a convalescing traveler.

After the museum, we headed for a rotisserie restaurant for lunch that Chuck had noticed was nearby on the map. We both ordered half a chicken with roasted potatoes and enjoyed it at one of the tables on the sidewalk, laughing at the dogs sniffing the air while being walked down the sidewalk past us. Roasted chicken (still on the bone) is not the neatest food to eat and Becky would have preferred to not have an audience and attempted to avoid eye contact with passersby (even more than usual). Despite her self-consciousness, the chicken was very flavorful and filling and set us up nicely for an afternoon nap.

Becky was hoping she’d rally and feel up for exploring and dinner in old town Nice, but by evening she was feeling pretty drained. Chuck went on another pharmacy adventure to pick up some French cough syrup for her. As far as we can tell, the pharmacist gave him a homeopathic syrup that’s primarily honey, plantain, and thyme extract. It tastes phenomenal. We’ll see how it works and hopefully be up for more adventures tomorrow.
