After our slight dinner debacle last night we got up and made sure to take advantage of the light breakfast the b&b provided then we headed out on our the Trotternish loop which circles the north west part of the Isle of Skye and hits many of the top sights. As we left we noticed the other lady staying here kind of looking confused and when we came out she asked if were going north (we were) and if she could have a ride. We said hop in! She was french and spoke slightly broken English (far better than my crappy french or Spanish) so it took a bit to nail down where she wanted to go but eventually we all got on the same page and we dropped her near where she was hiking that morning. We continued north around the tip of the island and saw the ruins of Castle Duntulm which was a former castle of the MacDonald clan which along with the McLeods from yesterday’s Castle Dunvegan fought for years for supremacy of the islands. They eventually left this castle for another we may see tomorrow if we have time and it is a fenced off ruin today. This led to an interesting thing I had always heard about but never done in any of my UK trips. In the UK you can generally cross anyone’s land walking as long as you leave things more or less as they were and close gates etc as you go. In this case we crossed a sheep field and claimed a small hill to find the fenced in ruins we had seen from the road. After brazenly ignoring the warning sign we went in and had a look around. This is practically Evil Kenevil levels of daring for Becky. Overall the site seemed pretty safe probably the biggest risky area was you could walk up to what was a second floor level and there is a partially caved in floor where you can see down to a lower level so eventually that will likely cave in further. We skirted that area and wandered around then headed back to the car. Oh this area gave a good view of several of the Outer Hebrides islands as well. After our castle adventure we continued to a graveyard that housed a large memorial to Flora MacDonald who was the lady who helped disguise Bonnie Prince Charlie and helped him escape back to France after the defeat at Culloden. There was another interesting tidbit in this very old cemetery. Apparently Angus MacDonald (I think a clan chief of the MacDonald’s ) on his travels found a grave covering block of a knight in armor (possibly on the grave of an early Scottish king) and decided he liked it so much he brought it home and carried it from his boat to the house on his back then asked to be buried under it. He’s still resting under it as of today. After this we headed to a really cool spot called the Fairy Glens. I promise I will get some pics up soon so you can see this one but it is this valley of domed formations with kind of wrinkled sides that the locals associated with fairies. In fact all the sheep you see in that valley are supposedly fairies until a human enters the valley. We hiked around several of the formations then hit the road back to Portree which is the main town on this end of the island. We stopped in a little pub for lunch and being a couple we often get sat in close proximity with another couple and this was one of those times. Two ladies came in and sat just a little after we ordered and immediately started chatting with us. We soon realized one was from San Antonio so we compared notes on some Texas and American travel things and then started chatting about what we all had seen so far. They were impressed we were out and about on our own driving ourselves and everything (there’s an element of cheapness to this if I’m honest). They were on a tour of the highlands and had just come from Glasgow direction so they were doing the opposite loop from what we were doing. We shared tips on places to see as each of our trips moved forward and then parted ways. After a swing through the Portree harbor area we stopped in a little grocery store to grab a 5 star dinner for later on at the B&B. Neither of us felt like getting out again in the evening as I am still slowly getting better while I think Becky may be slowly catching whatever I had. Tomorrow is another transition day and we will add a car Ferry to our transportation list. We came back to the hotel for a nice lazy late afternoon and are now enjoying our posh cup noodles and English cheese and cracker dinner.
