5/27 – Back from the dead and off to the Isle of Skye

Woke up feeling about 75% which was a huge improvement from the morning before. We headed over to the Inverness bouncy bridge because Becky did it alone yesterday and she also loves to see me terrified on bridges. It wasn’t too bad.. not nearly as terrifying as the one in Pitlochry. It was early and not much was open so we grabbed breakfast at McDonald’s near the hotel and hit the road to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. The views along Loch Ness are very nice as it’s in a relatively steep valley with hills immediately on either bank. We drove along the Loch all the way out of Inverness and to Castle Urquhart. Urquhart was a castle built in the 13th century and was held by the Scottish kings early in its life then ceded to the Grant clan later on. It lasted up until the civil war but the government supporting Grants were left without support to hold the castle they destroyed the gatehouse and left. This was definitely a photogenic castle on the shores of Loch Ness and had enough history to be a good stop. After leaving the castle we headed to another castle though 2.5 hours away on the scenic Isle of Skye. When we got to the turnoff for Castle Duvegan there was a little kind of hiker way station cafe and brewery so we stopped for lunch. This was a super fun spot with all sorts of whiskeys and beers on tap. I had fish and chips and Becky had haggis which I tried as well. This was our first time trying it by itself. Castle Dunvegan and Gardens have similar historic timelines as the other castles we have seen though the difference here is it has been continually updated and lived in through the centuries by the McLeod Clan chiefs. The parts you visit are kept in 17th-18th century look and feel with tons of paintings of the McLeod Clan chiefs and their wives. They had some cool items from the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the McLeod history as well. The views from almost every direction are stunning on the coast of the Isle. We then toured the gardens which Becky loved. They were an interesting mix of a waterfall/creek garden and a walled garden surrounded by a tall stone wall. This one had tons of edible plants but was also arranged beautifully. In the center there was an interesting sundial as well. The final one we looked at was surrounded similarly to the last but by a tall boxwood hedge. After finishing up at the gardens we decided to head to the b&b first before grabbing dinner though *spoiler alert* we would live to regret this decision. On the road to the B&B we had to stop on the single lane road twice for sheep which was so fun. The whole area around our B&B is sheep farms. This place is pretty great overall with stunning views. We got unloaded and settled and met the owner who was so nice and welcoming. We headed to the only restaurant that showed open ( things close super early on the Isle) bit it and the grocery it was attached to were already closed. We tried one more that was 15 minutes or so away and it was on a 45 minute wait so we decided to just have a meal from the snacks we had plus some stuff from the breakfast room at the B&B. Pringles, instant porridge and shortbread is now the new supper of champions. Pics to come later.
