Chuck was feeling a little under the weather today, so we took it easy. We had reservations for a guided tour at the Culloden battlefield (the last battle of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s 1745 rebellion, known as “the ’45” by locals) that we didn’t want to miss, so we slept in a bit and headed over for our 10 am tour. It was another beautiful sunny morning, if a bit cool, and the tour guide was very informative and witty with a knack for story-telling. It was such a critical turning point in Scottish history, seeing the battlefield in person while hearing the story really drove it home. Nevertheless, it was a walking tour and Chuck was pretty tired afterwards, so we headed to the hotel so he could rest.
We have a teeny tiny hotel room and I was afraid if I hung around, I’d keep waking him up, so I headed out to do some more exploring around Inverness. I grabbed a “fish stick sandwich” and a local beer from the Victorian Market we visited yesterday, checked out a really cool used book store that reminded me of Powell’s in Portland, sat and read in a graveyard overlooking the river, walked across an unnervingly bouncy suspension bridge, people-watched for a while at a sidewalk cafe with a hot cup of tea, and checked out the Inverness Museum and Gallery.

Chuck is feeling a bit better after his rest, but still didn’t feel up to going out for a sit-down dinner. Instead, we grabbed some to-go sandwiches at the co-op down the block and are eating picnic style in the hotel lobby before we call it an early night.
