Passport quest and more Munich – 12/17/2018

So we slept in a bit and after having the hotel print my forms the morning quest was to get an envelope, stamp, passport pictures and exchange some more cash. Thankfully Becky helped and we split up and she got the cash and stamps and I found an office supply store and got an envelope then was directed to a department store for my photos. I felt like we had accomplished so much when Becky caught up with me at the photo place and we paid and left with all I needed for the consulate. We grabbed lunch of a uuuuuuge brat as Loren would say and Becky got a Munich style brat for lunch from a Christmas market vendor. After we split and I headed to the subway and the US consulate. I get there and after a very thorough security check and surrendering my smartwatch I was directed in to a line for passport issues. After a few minutes I got to the window and explained my situation and proudly presented my envelope of items to the man only to be told that the envelope and stamp were not needed (the email had this in red), the passport pictures were too small (guess Euro passport photos are a different size?) and that I could have just gotten photos in their photo booth for less than I paid for the wrong sized set. Government bureaucracy at it’s finest but ultimately they took my forms and one correction and a brief interview and oath later I was the proud owner of a shiny emergency passport good for 1 year! Lesson learned, don’t lose your passport. I walked back to the hotel and met Becky and we continued our city walking tour we had left off yesterday.

We started at the famous Hofbrauhaus and had two huge beers (to be honest I had a radler which is beer mixed with lemonade) and did a good amount of people watching. This is a place you kinda have to go to in Munich but it is crazy and mostly filled with other tourists. After that we saw the fancy shopping street Maximilian Strasse and continued past the national theater and the Residenz (former home to the Bavarian Kings).

After passing the Residenz we went through Odeonplatz and into the Hofgarten which is a beautiful park behind the Residenz.

From here we took the subway to Sendlinger Tor which is an old gate from the old city walls and was site of another Christmas market and also the loading site for the Christkindltram. The Christkindltram is a tram decorated for Christmas that circles through old town and we wanted to ride but found out that you needed reservations and all were sold out for the season.

We made the best of it and walked through the Christmas market there and continued back to the Marienplatz and decided to eat dinner at the Augustiner Beer Hall which was very tasty. This made for a long day so we headed back to the hotel to wind down and prepare for a day in Salzburg, Austria tomorrow.
